Aeon Reports Record First Half, Driven by Health & Wellness
Aeon Co. Ltd. reported record first-half operating revenue of „5.90 trillion, a 13.8% increase year-over-year, driven by robust growth in its health & wellness, developer/entertainment, and ASEAN businesses. Operating profit also reached a record high, increasing by 10.7% to „130.7 billion.
The strong performance comes amid a complex macroeconomic environment, with the company navigating international geopolitical uncertainty, rising resource and exchange rates, and persistent inflationary pressures in Japan. The results reflect Aeonās strategy of focusing on higher-growth segments and implementing structural reforms.
The Health & Wellness segment was a significant driver of growth, benefiting from the consolidation of Tsuruha Holdings. The Developer & Entertainment sector also contributed strongly, while the ASEAN business saw continued expansion, particularly in Vietnam. Aeon has been actively pursuing a multi-format strategy in ASEAN, combining retail, shopping centers, entertainment, and financial services.
Despite positive trends, the GMS business faced challenges due to factors like the waning effects of prior-year rice demand spikes and rising costs. The company is responding with initiatives focused on price optimization, promotional activities, and value-added offerings. Additionally, Aeon is undertaking structural reforms including streamlining operations and integrating businesses to improve efficiency.
Looking ahead, Aeon is focused on enhancing its portfolio with high-return businesses, reforming the structure of its food retail operations, completing ongoing structural reforms, and strengthening its financial position. The company is also committed to sustainability initiatives and supporting local communities. The reported results demonstrate a trajectory of growth and strategic adaptation within a challenging economic landscape, though continued inflationary pressures and regional economic conditions will remain key factors to watch.
