AIXTRON Shares Fall as US Election Fuels Chip Sector Sell-Off

AIXTRON SE shares experienced a double-digit percentage decline on November 5th, mirroring a wider investor retreat from chip stocks triggered by the outcome of the US midterm elections. The sell-off, detailed in reports from dpa-AFX, reflects growing anxieties about potential headwinds for the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, with investors fearing stricter regulations could delay the expansion of data centers and related projects.

The market turbulence saw significant losses across the board, with US chip giants like Nvidia falling as much as 8% and European heavyweight ASML losing nearly 10% of its market capitalization – a decline of approximately €50 billion. The decline in AIXTRON’s share price occurred alongside similar drops for German peers Infineon, Suss, and Siltronic, indicating a broad-based reassessment of risk within the sector. This reaction underscores the sensitivity of the semiconductor market to political developments and the ongoing debate about the pace of returns on massive AI investments.

Amidst these market jitters, the European Union unveiled a €525 million initiative aimed at bolstering its domestic chip industry. The program will provide funding to startups for software, consulting, and production capacity, with grants ranging up to €16 million for more advanced developments. This initiative signals a strategic effort to reduce Europe’s reliance on the US and China in the critical semiconductor space, currently accounting for around 10% of global production, with a goal to reach 20% by 2030.

The EU’s commitment to supporting its chip industry represents a long-term counterweight to the immediate market anxieties stemming from the US election. While the impact of the US political landscape on AIXTRON’s near-term performance remains uncertain, the European initiative provides a potential avenue for growth and diversification, though its effects will not be realized for years to come.
