Allianz Faces German Auto Insurance Profit Decline

German auto insurance profits are expected to fall sharply, with Hannover Rück forecasting a decline to €200 million in 2027, a substantial decrease from the €1.1 billion reported in 2025. The forecast, reiterated in announcements on October 19th, attributes the downturn to escalating costs for replacement parts and repairs, impacting the profitability of insurers like Allianz.

According to Hannover Rück, the German auto insurance sector is projected to achieve an insurance technical profit of €0.5 billion in the current year, less than half the €1.1 billion earned in the previous year. This represents approximately 1.3% of premium income, a figure anticipated to shrink further to 0.5% in 2027. While insurers increased tariffs and improved profitability, Hannover Rück assesses the situation as fragile, citing that rising costs will only be partially offset by premium increases.

Hannover Rück, as the largest auto reinsurance provider in Germany, holds insight into the pricing strategies of major insurers, including Allianz and Huk Coburg. The company’s analysis focuses on both new and existing customer rates, providing a broader perspective than comparison portals. The escalating costs are driven by increasingly complex vehicle technology and rising labor rates at repair shops.

The decline in profitability is projected to happen despite ongoing premium increases. Hannover Rück notes that the extent of these increases will vary among insurers, with some already having achieved sufficient profitability and others needing more substantial adjustments. The outlook suggests a challenging environment for German auto insurers, potentially prompting further premium adjustments to mitigate the impact of rising costs.

These forecasts point to a weakening outlook for the German auto insurance market, impacting profitability and potentially leading to further premium adjustments. The sector's technical profit is expected to decline significantly, from 1.3% of premium income this year to 0.5% in 2027. This trend reflects the broader pressure of rising input costs on the financial services industry.
