Alphabet Q3 Revenue Jumps 25% on Cloud Strength

Alphabet’s third-quarter revenue surged 25% year-over-year to $127.6 billion, propelled by significant growth in its Google Cloud division and Google Services segment. The results, reported in a 10-Q filing, signal continued momentum across the tech giant’s diversified business lines, coinciding with a broadly positive corporate earnings environment.

Google Cloud led the growth, increasing revenue by $15.6 billion, a dramatic 103% year-over-year increase. Google Services also contributed strongly, with revenues up $9.3 billion, or 11%. This growth in Google Cloud was primarily driven by infrastructure and platform services, alongside increased sales of Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) systems. Within Google Services, growth was fueled by gains in YouTube ads and subscriptions from YouTube and Google One.

While revenue climbed, Alphabet’s cost of revenues also rose, increasing 24% year-over-year to $51.4 billion. This increase was largely attributable to higher inventory and related costs tied to the sale of TPU systems, as well as increased depreciation expense and content acquisition costs for YouTube. Operating expenses also increased by 20% to $35.6 billion, driven by rising employee compensation and depreciation.

The filing details ongoing investments in AI, including custom TPUs and integration of AI capabilities into existing products. The company also highlighted the risks associated with these investments, including the potential for diversion of resources and the possibility of commercial failure. Furthermore, Alphabet disclosed a $5.2 billion fine paid in July related to a 2018 European antitrust decision.

Alphabet’s third-quarter performance reflects its ability to capitalize on strong demand for cloud services and continued growth in its core advertising business. The 25% increase in overall revenue, coupled with a 24% rise in the cost of revenues, demonstrates the company’s continued expansion and investment in future growth areas, particularly in AI and cloud infrastructure.
