Audi CEO Faces Calls for Resignation After Trump Rally Appearance

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner is facing mounting pressure, including calls for his resignation, following his appearance alongside US President Donald Trump at the announcement of a new $4 billion factory in Georgia. The event, intended to showcase Audi’s investment in the US market, has drawn sharp criticism from German labor unions and political figures who accuse Döllner of violating company policy and aligning with a controversial political figure.

Volkswagen’s works council chair, Daniela Cavallo, strongly condemned Döllner’s participation, stating the CEO had become “an active part” of a political rally filled with “racism, sexism, xenophobia,” and drawing parallels to Volkswagen’s history during the Nazi era. Critics point to Audi’s internal guidelines explicitly prohibiting public engagements with political candidates in the lead-up to elections – guidelines Döllner allegedly violated with his appearance. The timing of the announcement, coinciding with US midterm elections, has further fueled the controversy.

Several political leaders have weighed in, with Lower Saxony’s Minister President Olaf Lies, a member of Volkswagen’s supervisory board, stating that a political rally was “not the right place” to announce such an investment. The IG Metall union has also voiced strong disapproval, accusing Döllner of prioritizing public relations in the US market over the interests of German workers who are facing cost-cutting measures. Criticism extends to the perception that significant investment is being directed towards the US while domestic operations face cuts.

Döllner defended his actions in a letter to employees, stating the decision to attend the event was made “exclusively in the interest of the company” after being invited to jointly announce plans with the US President. He acknowledged the event was perceived as a political signal but reiterated Audi’s commitment to its core values and the economic future of the company. However, this justification has done little to quell the escalating backlash.

The controversy highlights a potential clash between securing investment in a key market and upholding corporate social responsibility and political neutrality. The situation presents a significant reputational risk for the BMW Group, and the outcome could set a precedent for how the company navigates politically charged environments in the future. The calls for Döllner’s resignation suggest the severity of the concerns within the organization and among its stakeholders.
