Audi to Build $4B US Factory Amid Political Controversy

Audi will invest $4 billion to build a new SUV manufacturing facility in Georgia, marking the brand’s first US production plant. The facility is planned to produce 200,000 vehicles annually and create approximately 4,500 jobs. The announcement, notably made during a political rally with US President Donald Trump, included an on-stage appearance by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner thanking Trump for his support.

The unusual setting for the announcement immediately sparked political controversy. Isabel Cademartori, a transportation expert from Germany’s SPD party, criticized Döllner’s appearance as providing campaign support to a leader enacting trade wars against Germany, referencing Volkswagen’s historical ties to the Nazi regime. Despite these criticisms, Audi supervisory board chairman Manfred Döss voiced support for the board’s direction, stating investment is crucial for long-term competitiveness.

The planned investment comes amidst a sales crisis for Volkswagen and discussions surrounding potential job cuts and plant closures in Germany. According to Audi, the US investment is not intended as a detriment to German facilities but rather a strategic step to enhance global competitiveness, citing North America as a key growth market. The company emphasized that local production will mitigate risks related to tariffs, currency fluctuations, and supply chains.

The project remains subject to approval by the Volkswagen supervisory board, though it already has support from the Audi supervisory board chairman. The company stated that this investment will contribute to the foundation for utilization of its German plants. The final decision will be made with a holistic view, as stated by IG Metall, representing the interests of the employees.

The investment amount of $4 billion will be used to produce premium SUVs tailored to the North American market, with production slated to begin in the early 2030s. The decision reflects a broader strategy within the Volkswagen Group to bolster its presence in the North American market.
