Bank of China Completes RMB50 Billion Bond Issuance, Previews Q3 Results

Bank of China completed the issuance of RMB50 billion in Tier 2 capital bonds on October 20th, a move intended to replenish the bank’s capital base. The 10-year bonds carry a coupon rate of 1.74% and include a redemption option for the issuer after five years, as disclosed in a Hong Kong Exchange filing.

This bond issuance follows shareholder approval in July 2025 for up to RMB450 billion in capital instruments, and subsequent regulatory clearances. The funds raised will be used to strengthen the bank’s Tier 2 capital, a key metric for assessing financial stability and regulatory compliance. This action occurs against a backdrop of heightened government support for Chinese financial institutions, including a recent $54 billion capital injection into state-owned banks and insurers, signaling concerns about systemic stability and the need to bolster confidence in the sector.

Separately, Bank of China announced a board meeting scheduled for October 30th to approve the bank’s unaudited results for the third quarter ended September 30th. This suggests an upcoming release of key financial performance indicators, providing investors with a more comprehensive view of the bank’s operational health. The timing of this announcement aligns with broader efforts to stimulate China’s economy, particularly its property sector, through easing lending restrictions and adjusting interest rates.

The completion of the bond issuance provides Bank of China with increased financial flexibility and strengthens its capital position. The successful placement of RMB50 billion in Tier 2 capital reflects investor confidence in the bank’s creditworthiness and growth prospects, despite ongoing uncertainties in the Chinese economy. This capital injection will be crucial for supporting the bank’s lending activities and navigating potential risks associated with a slowing economic environment.
