BMW Faces Potential Labor Unrest Amid EV Transition
BMW is facing planned protests from the IG Metall union in Bavaria, Germany, as part of a nationwide demonstration against job cuts and potential factory closures within the automotive industry. The protests, scheduled for Monday, will take place at over 50 facilities across the state, including BMW, Audi, and Bosch locations in Ingolstadt, Munich, and Nuremberg.
The union attributes the current challenges faced by automakers to management’s “inertia and catastrophic misjudgments” in adapting to developments in electric mobility, digitalization, and battery technology. IG Metall is specifically demanding investments in domestic locations and the preservation of the 35-hour workweek. Larger rallies are planned in Nuremberg and Munich, while Audi’s Ingolstadt plant will host a public meeting with local officials.
These protests occur ahead of upcoming wage negotiations within the metal industry and highlight growing labor concerns regarding the automotive sector’s transition to electric vehicles. The planned demonstrations underscore the potential for industrial action as German automakers navigate structural changes and adapt to evolving market demands.
