BMW Q3 Profit Plummets 30% as China Crisis Deepens

BMW’s financial performance deteriorated sharply in the third quarter, with profit before interest and taxes falling by almost 30% to €1.59 billion, according to a company announcement. The downturn, detailed in a November 4th filing, is largely attributed to a deepening crisis in the crucial Chinese market, where revenue declined by nearly 6% to €30.5 billion. This decline significantly impacted the automotive division’s profit margin, which plummeted 1.8 percentage points to 3.4%.

The profit drop prompted BMW to revise its 2026 profit forecast downward. Management now anticipates a profit margin of just -0.5% to 0.5% for the automotive segment, a substantial reduction from the previously projected 1% to 3%. The company cited faster-than-expected progress with cost-cutting measures, including job cuts, and a quicker transition to its new “Neue Klasse” electric vehicle model generation as contributing factors, although these measures appear insufficient to offset the challenges in China.

The company’s struggles in China echo recent concerns about slowing economic growth and weakening corporate profits in the region, a risk flagged in broader market signals. While the automaker benefits from a potentially easing of EU regulations regarding the sale of combustion engine vehicles after 2035 – a development discussed in a separate filing – this regulatory shift offers limited immediate relief from the current profit pressures. The company is also navigating potentially tense labor relations, as highlighted by reports of wage disparities within the German automotive industry, though this issue appears secondary to the immediate financial concerns.

The significant drop in Q3 profit, coupled with the lowered forecast, suggests BMW is facing substantial headwinds. The 3.4% automotive profit margin represents a considerable decline from prior periods, and the revised outlook indicates that these challenges are likely to persist. The reliance on cost-cutting and a swift EV transition to bolster profitability, while strategically sound, remains unproven in the face of the ongoing crisis in its largest market.
