BMW Sales Rise as EU EV Adoption Surges

BMW sales experienced a 4.6% increase through September 2026, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (Acea), as electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates across the European Union. This growth occurs as the broader automotive market shifts, with pure electric vehicles (BEVs) now representing 22.7% of all car registrations – a substantial 6.6 percentage point increase compared to the same period last year.

The surge in EV demand is occurring alongside a decline in traditional combustion engine vehicles. Registrations for both gasoline and diesel cars fell by 20% during the first nine months of the year. Overall, car registrations across all powertrain types increased by 5.7% to nearly 8.52 million vehicles, with a 9.3% jump in September alone, indicating a strengthening market despite the transition.

The competitive landscape is also shifting, with Chinese EV manufacturer BYD experiencing a remarkable 150% increase in sales, reaching 206,002 vehicles. US-based Tesla saw a 70% sales increase, selling 188,035 cars, while Volkswagen Group sales remained relatively flat. Mercedes-Benz also posted a modest sales increase of 3.6%.

The data suggests a clear trend towards electrification, driven in part by high gasoline prices across Europe. BMW’s sales increase positions it amidst this shift, although its growth rate lags behind competitors like BYD and Tesla. The company’s performance will be closely watched as it continues to navigate the evolving automotive market and the increasing demand for electric vehicles.

The reported increase in overall EU car registrations to nearly 8.52 million vehicles through the first three quarters, combined with the significant growth in BEV market share, underscores the momentum in the sector. This comes as manufacturers adjust their strategies to meet tightening emissions regulations and shifting consumer preferences.
