China Telecom Q3 Revenue Declines Amidst Market Slowdown

China Telecom’s operating revenues decreased 3.1% year-over-year to RMB 382.402 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, according to a recent filing. This decline reflects the challenging economic conditions in China and weakening consumer spending, a trend impacting the broader luxury goods market as evidenced by recent reports. Profit attributable to equity holders also fell, decreasing 14.2% to RMB 26.187 billion compared to RMB 30.771 billion in the same period last year.

The company’s mobile subscriber base continued to grow, reaching 445.27 million as of the end of the third quarter, with a net increase of 2.84 million subscribers during the period. Notably, 5G network subscribers accounted for a significant portion of the total, reaching 330.39 million, with a net addition of 7.89 million subscribers. Wireline broadband subscribers, however, saw a modest net increase of only 0.21 million, reaching 201.49 million.

From a balance sheet perspective, total assets stood at RMB 879.463 billion as of September 30, 2026, slightly higher than the RMB 870.644 billion reported at the end of 2025. Total liabilities also increased to RMB 408.015 billion, up from RMB 402.384 billion, while total equity reached RMB 471.448 billion. The company’s condensed consolidated statement of cash flows shows a net decrease in cash and cash equivalents of RMB 25.362 billion during the nine-month period.

The board also announced a change in the Company Secretary, appointing Mr. Wang Libin, effective October 22, 2026, replacing Mr. Li Yinghui, who has resigned from the position. This governance change occurs alongside the release of the financial results and provides an update on the leadership structure.

These results come amidst a broader macroeconomic environment in China characterized by slowing growth and shifting consumer preferences. The decrease in revenue and profit year-over-year suggests that China Telecom, like its peers, is facing headwinds from these economic pressures. While subscriber numbers continue to climb, particularly in the 5G segment, translating those gains into revenue growth remains a challenge.
