Chugai Pharmaceutical Halts Obesity Drug, Revives SMA Program
Chugai Pharmaceutical will discontinue the development of emugrobart, an anti-myostatin-sweeping antibody, for obesity. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of data, including interim analysis from the ongoing Phase II GYMINDA trial, which indicated that achieving clinically meaningful weight loss would be difficult. While emugrobart demonstrated good tolerability, the trial failed to meet pre-defined efficacy goals.
Chugai previously announced the halt of emugrobart development for SMA and facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) in March 2026. However, the company now believes there is an opportunity to proceed with a Phase III clinical trial for SMA, based on the subcutaneous delivery route, existing safety data, and potential improvements to the clinical trial design. Chugai is preparing to restart SMA development, considering both internal advancement and potential out-licensing opportunities. The company maintains ongoing research into other anti-obesity treatments.
This decision will not impact Chugai’s previously announced full-year 2026 financial forecast. The shift in focus from obesity to SMA represents a strategic redirection of resources towards a program the company believes offers a clearer path to clinical success, despite prior setbacks.
