Continental AG Eyes Multi-Billion Euro Acquisitions, Focuses on Asia
Continental AG is prepared to spend several billion euros on acquisitions should the tire industry undergo consolidation, according to CEO Christian Kötz. The executive indicated a willingness to pursue deals that are financially sound and strategically beneficial.
Kötz specifically highlighted potential acquisitions in the specialty tire segment and opportunities to strengthen the company’s presence in the Asian market. Continental generates roughly one billion euros of free cash flow annually, after interest and taxes, providing a funding source for potential transactions. The company also sees significant growth potential in North America, particularly in the pick-up and SUV segments, where it currently has an underrepresented market share.
The CEO’s comments signal a proactive approach to growth through strategic acquisitions, as opposed to solely relying on organic expansion. This strategy acknowledges the changing dynamics of the tire industry and the need to secure a stronger foothold in key growth markets.
Continental’s cash flow of approximately one billion euros annually after interest and taxes positions the company to pursue these acquisitions. This figure is consistent with prior reporting and indicates a capacity for substantial capital deployment without significantly increasing debt.
