Daimler Faces Labor Demands Amidst China Sales Slump
German automaker Daimler AG is confronting escalating labor demands alongside a significant downturn in vehicle sales, particularly in China, creating a challenging operating environment. The company, through its Mercedes-Benz division, is currently engaged in labor negotiations where unions are seeking a 5% wage increase for approximately 900,000 workers across various industries in Baden-Württemberg, citing the need to offset rising inflation. This demand comes as the German metal and electrical industry experiences its longest recession since the end of World War II, with production down 2.2% year-over-year and 15% below pre-crisis levels from 2018.
The pressure on Daimler’s profitability is compounded by a substantial 8% decrease in Mercedes-Benz vehicle sales during the third quarter. The primary driver of this decline was a nearly one-third drop in sales within China, a key market for the luxury automaker. While sales increased in the US and Germany, these gains were insufficient to offset the losses in China, where the competitive landscape is intensifying. The company noted a particularly sharp decline in sales within its highest-margin segment, including flagship models like the S-Class and the Maybach line, falling by approximately 20%.
Despite the overall sales decline, Mercedes-Benz experienced positive momentum in electric vehicle (EV) sales, with nearly one-third of passenger car sales in Europe being fully electric. The company reported its highest-ever quarterly sales of EVs, suggesting its ongoing model offensive is gaining traction. A strong order backlog for new electric models indicates continued demand in this segment. However, the company acknowledged the challenging market conditions in China, emphasizing the intensity of competition.
These developments occur as the European Union considers import restrictions on Chinese hybrid vehicles, a move intended to protect European automakers from increased competition. While such measures could benefit companies like Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault, Mercedes-Benz experienced a decline in its share price amidst the broader market uncertainty. The ongoing labor negotiations and the weakening Chinese market, coupled with potential trade barriers, present a complex set of challenges for Daimler as it navigates a shifting automotive landscape.
The most significant data point reported is the 8% overall sales decline, and the nearly 33% drop in sales in China, illustrating the significant challenges the company faces in its largest market. These declines are occurring against a backdrop of rising labor costs and the potential for increased trade tensions, signaling a difficult period for Daimler’s profitability and growth prospects.
