Daimler Shares Rise on Germany-France Auto Pact

Shares of Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz) rose sharply on October 16, 2026, following an agreement between Germany and France to jointly promote the development and manufacturing of electric vehicles and reduce CO2 emissions. The broader European automotive sector experienced a significant rebound, with the sector index gaining 2.3% – its largest increase in six years.

The agreement, announced Friday, intends to “significantly reduce CO2 emissions and strengthen Europe’s capacity for the development and production of the next generation of electric vehicles,” according to a joint statement. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz characterized the pact as an “investment signal to the industry.” The deal also signals a potential further loosening of the EU-wide ban on combustion engines than previously anticipated.

Analysts at the Centrum für Europäische Politik (cep) commented that “more flexibility with CO2 fleet limits for cars is an important signal to financially support the European automotive industry in its transition to electromobility.” This comes as the automotive sector, alongside industrial and chemical companies, demonstrates resilience amid a broader pullback in technology stocks linked to concerns over US inflation and interest rates.

Daimler shares rose approximately 3.5% in late trading, mirroring gains for Volkswagen (up 3.9%) and BMW (up around 3.5%). The gains reflect a broader positive sentiment toward traditional industries less reliant on technology valuations during a period of market volatility.

The agreement underscores a shift towards supporting established automotive manufacturers as they navigate the transition to electric vehicles, providing a framework for investment and development in a crucial sector for both Germany and France. This is especially pertinent as automakers face increasing pressure to meet stringent emissions targets and adapt to evolving consumer demand.
