Deutsche Post Airport Targeted in Drone Attack

Deutsche Post AG’s Leipzig/Halle airport was the target of an attempted attack involving an explosive drone on August 4. The device was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes, prompting an investigation by German authorities. Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated investigators are “relatively far” along and a response will follow soon.

Reports suggest the government is preparing a comprehensive package of measures against Moscow, though officials are refraining from speculation before official attribution. A government spokesperson emphasized the need for careful consideration to avoid escalation. Potential responses include diplomatic expulsions and summoning the ambassador of the implicated country.

German security agencies report a rise in sabotage and cyberattacks originating from Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine. A near-miss incident occurred in July 2024 when a parcel at the same airport ignited, suspected to be placed by Russian actors. Prior attacks on German soil, including the 1986 La Belle discotheque bombing and the 1992 Mykonos restaurant attack, involved state-sponsored actors. The investigation into a weapons cache discovered in 2025 also points to potential foreign involvement.

Authorities are considering invoking Article 4 of the NATO treaty to consult with allies. Disrupting Russia’s “shadow fleet” of tankers is also under consideration if Russian state involvement is confirmed.

The incident highlights an increasing trend of hybrid attacks targeting Germany’s critical infrastructure. Prior incidents, such as the 2019 Tiergarten murder, resulted in diplomatic expulsions.
