Globalfoundries Signals Further Dresden Fab Expansion
Globalfoundries is evaluating further expansion of its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Dresden, Germany, potentially adding to its existing €1.1 billion investment, according to a company spokesperson. While the company did not confirm a reported €1.5 billion investment planned to begin in 2028, the spokesperson indicated that the current expansion represents the first phase of a long-term vision for the site, subject to market developments.
The current expansion, dubbed “Sprint,” will add 5,000 square meters to the existing 60,000 square meters of cleanroom and laboratory space. This project is already receiving substantial public support through the European Chips Act, with €495 million in funding allocated toward the expansion. The broader development of the Dresden facility reflects a significant bolstering of the “Silicon Saxony” region as a leading European microelectronics hub.
This potential expansion occurs alongside similar investments from Infineon and TSMC, further establishing Dresden as a key location for semiconductor production. The regional network already comprises approximately 3,600 companies employing over 80,000 people, with a goal of reaching 100,000 employees by 2040. The coordinated investments signify a strategic push to strengthen European semiconductor independence, supported by initiatives like the European Chips Act.
The news from Globalfoundries reinforces a trend of substantial investment in European semiconductor capacity. These expansions are driven by growing demand for chips, particularly those used in automotive and industrial applications, and a desire to reduce reliance on Asian manufacturing hubs. The willingness of companies like Globalfoundries to make further investments suggests confidence in the long-term viability and strategic importance of the European market.
