Hochtief's Profit Surges 50% on AI-Driven Demand

Hochtief AG’s adjusted net profit jumped nearly 50% year-over-year to €271.9 million in the third quarter, fueled by a surge in demand for infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence, the company disclosed Thursday. The results confirm Hochtief’s position as a key beneficiary of the ongoing AI infrastructure buildout, a trend previously flagged by investors and analysts.

This profitability was underpinned by a record order backlog of €90 billion as of September 30th, a 29% increase compared to the same period last year. The growth in both profit and backlog is directly attributable to increasing demand in the AI, energy, defense, and critical minerals sectors, with recent contracts including data centers in Asia, the US, and Europe. Revenue also rose substantially, climbing 22.3% to over €11.9 billion during the quarter. The company reaffirmed its raised profit target for the year, anticipating a net profit between €1.025 and €1.1 billion—a significant increase from the €789.3 million reported in 2025.

Despite the strong results, Hochtief’s share price experienced initial volatility following the earnings release, falling as much as 9% before partially recovering to a roughly 2% decline. This sensitivity reflects broader market concerns regarding the sustainability of the AI boom and the potential for increased regulation stemming from the recent US elections. Investors are reacting cautiously to the AI megatrend, worried about potential overvaluation.

The company’s strong performance is a continuation of a trend noted in recent months, with the demand for AI-driven computing power and cloud services driving significant investment in data centers and related infrastructure. Hochtief expects global data center capacity to double by 2030, positioning the company to capitalize on this expansion. The Q3 results demonstrate that Hochtief is effectively translating rising demand into concrete financial gains, but market anxieties regarding the long-term trajectory of the AI sector remain a factor.
