ICBC Completes Redemption of $6.16 Billion in Tier 1 Capital Bonds
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) completed the full redemption of its U.S.$6.16 billion undated Additional Tier 1 Capital Bonds on September 24, 2026. The bonds, initially listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2021, have been cancelled following the redemption.
ICBC exercised its right to redeem all outstanding bonds, as previously announced on August 25, 2026. The bank has applied for the withdrawal of the listing, which is expected to be effective by the close of business on October 7, 2026. This action reduces ICBC’s outstanding Tier 1 capital and simplifies its capital structure.
The completion of this redemption comes amidst ongoing government capital injections into Chinese state-owned financial institutions. While these injections aim to bolster confidence, market reaction has been muted, suggesting concerns about underlying financial stability. ICBC’s proactive capital management through bond redemption and government support reflects a response to both internal economic pressures and evolving geopolitical dynamics.
