Lufthansa Pursues TAP Air Portugal Amid Kerosene Price Concerns
Lufthansa is poised to acquire a 44.9% stake in TAP Air Portugal for €1.2 billion, marking a continued expansion into Southern Europe and potentially solidifying its dominance in the region. The Portuguese government selected Lufthansa as its preferred partner for the state-owned airline, a deal that includes the potential for Lufthansa to acquire additional shares if employees do not exercise their purchase rights.
This move follows Lufthansa’s acquisition of ITA Airways and integrates several other European carriers, including those in Switzerland, Austria, and Belgium, into its portfolio. The transaction, which still requires contract finalization and regulatory approval, represents a significant investment for Lufthansa, with the total value reaching €1.201 billion including shares reserved for employees. Lufthansa intends to finance the purchase entirely with cash, foregoing stock-based compensation.
However, Lufthansa’s strategic expansion is occurring against a backdrop of rising operational costs, particularly concerning kerosene prices. JPMorgan recently downgraded Lufthansa's price target to €7.00, from €7.50, citing a potential 25% reduction in 2027 earnings due to the more than 65% increase in European kerosene prices since July. In response to potential supply constraints at Frankfurt Airport—attributed to reduced pipeline capacity and low Rhine water levels—Lufthansa is proactively implementing 'tankering' measures, adding extra fuel to flights before departure to mitigate potential disruptions.
The airline is taking precautionary measures to maintain flight operations, including increasing fuel loads on select routes, particularly short- and medium-haul flights, and potentially extending the practice to long-haul routes. The additional fuel load for Airbus A320 family aircraft is capped at eight tons, with flight planning adjustments to avoid compromising passenger or cargo capacity. While Lufthansa has not reported flight cancellations, the tankering strategy highlights the immediate pressure on operating costs.
Lufthansa’s pursuit of TAP Air Portugal and response to rising fuel costs underscore a complex operating environment. The company is actively expanding its network through acquisition while simultaneously navigating significant headwinds in fuel prices and supply chain logistics, necessitating proactive measures to safeguard operational reliability.
