OHB Secures €554M ESA Contract for Next-Gen Earth Observation

OHB SE has secured a landmark €554 million contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop the next generation of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 Topography satellite, solidifying its position as a key player in the European Earth observation sector and signaling a significant boost to its future revenue stream.

The contract, announced November 4th, includes an option for a second satellite and prompted a 5% jump in OHB’s stock price, indicating strong investor confidence. The new Sentinel-3 Next Generation Topography (S3-NGT) mission will build on existing Copernicus infrastructure, enhancing the accuracy and scope of vital climate and environmental monitoring data. Unlike its predecessors, the new generation will divide its instrument suite across separate missions, improving performance in both optical and radar-based measurements.

This win reinforces OHB’s established expertise in developing complex satellite systems, as highlighted by ESA officials. The S3-NGT mission will provide critical data on ocean dynamics, ice sheet changes, and the broader impacts of climate change, supporting informed decision-making for policymakers, scientists, and businesses. OHB CEO Marco Fuchs emphasized the contract’s importance for both European space capabilities and the company’s long-term growth.

The contract builds on OHB’s long-standing involvement with the Copernicus program, a partnership that dates back to earlier satellite deployments for the European Commission, as noted in prior filings. While the precise financial implications beyond the initial €554 million remain contingent on the exercise of the option for a second satellite, this deal represents a substantial addition to OHB’s order backlog and confirms its role in the evolution of crucial Earth observation technology.
