Rheinmetall Lands €1.7 Billion Satellite Contract with German Military

Rheinmetall has secured a significant €1.7 billion contract with the German Bundeswehr for the supply of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, marking a major expansion into the space domain and signaling Germany’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities. The announcement coincides with the commencement of serial production at Rheinmetall’s facility in Neuss, Germany, in partnership with Finnish satellite operator Iceye.

The SAR satellites, utilizing radar technology that penetrates cloud cover and operates effectively at night, will provide high-resolution imagery for military intelligence and situational awareness. Approximately 50 satellites are slated for annual production, with the first launch scheduled for early 2027 via SpaceX. The contract includes exclusive access for the Bundeswehr to a currently undisclosed number of satellites, guaranteeing prioritized imagery and eliminating wait times for tasking. This capability is particularly crucial for monitoring the NATO eastern flank and supporting the German brigade stationed in Lithuania, according to the filing.

The move represents a strategic diversification for Rheinmetall, traditionally focused on land-based systems like armored vehicles and artillery. The company has been actively expanding its portfolio through acquisitions, including shipbuilders and aircraft component manufacturers, alongside increasing its drone production. The satellite business is intended to provide a broad range of capabilities to NATO armies and reduce reliance on competitors. This development aligns with the broader trend of re-armament in Germany, fueled by geopolitical instability.

Competition in the SAR satellite market includes Airbus Defence and Space and OHB, with OHB having previously supplied SAR satellites to the Bundeswehr. While OHB is also vying for a larger upcoming SAR procurement tender, Rheinmetall secured this initial contract through a direct award. The Bundeswehr’s investment underscores the growing importance of space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities in modern warfare, despite the need for specialized personnel to interpret SAR data and the inherent vulnerability of satellite systems to cyberattacks and signal interference.
