RWE Power Experiencing Sabotage at Key Grid Connection
RWE AG is responding to a suspected act of sabotage at a key power grid connection point near Bergheim, Germany, resulting in outages at five of its coal-fired power plant blocks. Initial reports from the police indicate the incident was a deliberate act, not a technical malfunction. The affected blocks, located at the Niederaußem and Neurath power plants, have a combined capacity of approximately 4,200 megawatts, though only around 3,000 MW was being supplied to the grid at the time of the incident.
The general electricity supply was not impacted, with Amprion, the transmission system operator, stating it could compensate for the lost RWE capacity from other sources. Authorities discovered six launch devices in a nearby field, used to propel conductive material over power lines, mirroring a similar incident in Brandenburg on the same day. The police are investigating potential links to foreign state-sponsored sabotage or left-wing extremism.
As of the latest reports, three of the five affected blocks have been brought back online: blocks G at Neurath and H at Niederaußem, with block F at Neurath expected to follow. RWE anticipates the remaining two blocks will be operational by the coming weekend, though the process is dependent on the cooling of components. The company did not provide specific financial implications related to the outages or the restoration efforts.
The incidents in Bergheim and Brandenburg, alongside previous attacks on energy infrastructure, have prompted increased coordination between German authorities. The events highlight vulnerabilities within the national power grid and underscore the potential for deliberate disruption. Investigators are also examining a prior arson incident at a substation in Reutlingen from June, which left approximately 40,000 people without power.
The recovery of power generation capacity is progressing, with three of the five affected blocks now operational. This represents a partial restoration of the approximately 3,000 MW of capacity initially impacted. The broader context of these incidents coincides with heightened geopolitical tensions and concerns about energy security in Europe, highlighting the increasing risks facing critical infrastructure.
