Siemens CEO Urges EU to Accelerate AI Regulation

Siemens CEO Roland Busch has called on the European Union to expedite the approval process for new artificial intelligence technologies, warning that overly restrictive regulations risk hindering innovation. In an interview with "Welt am Sonntag," Busch argued that the pace of AI development outstrips the speed of legislative action, potentially leaving European companies at a disadvantage. He cited the example of the proposed AI Act and Data Act, suggesting they could take two years to be adopted – a timeframe in which AI models could evolve significantly.

Busch also cautioned against broad tariffs on goods from China, stating that while targeted tariffs may be justified, protecting a lack of competitiveness would be detrimental. He characterized China not as a source of unfair trade practices but as a home to “very powerful competitors” with strong engineering teams and a rapid ability to adopt new technologies, including AI. This assessment frames the competitive landscape as one requiring European companies to adapt and respond, rather than seek protection.

Siemens has recently benefited from high demand related to AI data centers, particularly in the United States, and Busch anticipates this trend will continue into the next fiscal year and beyond. He dismissed concerns about an AI bubble, describing the current investment as “the biggest bet in history on technology,” but differentiated it from previous bubbles by noting that much of the funding comes from companies generating substantial cash flow. The CEO indicated that early positive effects of AI investments are already being observed.

The interview also touched on the potential benefits of AI, with Busch stating that it will positively transform markets, increase efficiency, conserve resources, and accelerate innovation. Busch did not specify the scale of the demand for AI data centers, nor did he quantify the “first positive effects” observed from AI investments. The filing does not disclose specific financial figures related to AI-driven revenue or investment returns.

The rapid evolution of AI and the emergence of strong competitors in China present both opportunities and challenges for European technology companies. The current debate over regulatory frameworks and trade policies will likely shape the competitive landscape in the coming years. The degree to which European regulators can balance fostering innovation with addressing potential risks remains a key factor, alongside the ability of companies like Siemens to adapt to a rapidly changing global market.
