Singapore Airlines: Passenger Traffic Rises, Load Factors Decline
Singapore Airlines Group reported a 1.5% year-over-year increase in passenger traffic for August 2026, alongside a 3.5% increase in passenger capacity. The growth was primarily seen on routes to East Asia, Europe, and the South West Pacific. However, this capacity expansion contributed to a decline in the Group’s overall passenger load factor, which decreased to 86.4% from 88.0% in the same period last year.
SIA’s individual passenger load factor fell more sharply, to 84.7% from 86.9%, while Scoot’s remained high at 92.2%, up slightly from 91.9%. Route-specific data shows load factor declines in East Asia, Europe, and the South West Pacific, indicating that capacity increases exceeded demand growth on those routes. Cargo loads increased 2.8% YoY, while capacity decreased 0.7%, resulting in a 2.0 percentage point increase in the cargo load factor to 57.2%.
The reported increase in passenger traffic, coupled with a decrease in the passenger load factor, suggests a strategic prioritization of capacity growth over maintaining high load factors. This approach may be aimed at capturing market share, particularly in the growing East Asian market, but it also indicates increasing competition and pressure on yields. The 0.7% decline in cargo capacity, paired with the 2.8% cargo load increase, shows stronger demand relative to available supply in air freight.
