Sinopec Q3 Profit Rises 30.0% Amid Crude Price Volatility

Sinopec reported a 30.0% year-on-year increase in net profit attributable to shareholders for the first nine months of 2026, reaching RMB 38.988 billion, according to a filing to the Hong Kong Exchange. The gains were driven by improved margins in refining and chemical products, coupled with benefits from rising crude oil prices, despite dampened demand in some areas.

The positive results arrived against a backdrop of geopolitical instability in the Middle East and fluctuating international oil prices, with the average spot price of Platts Brent increasing 32.7% year-on-year to USD 94.05 per barrel. While China’s economy maintained stable growth, domestic refined oil product consumption declined by 8.6% year-on-year due to high prices and rising demand for alternative energy sources. Domestic natural gas consumption saw a marginal increase of 0.1%.

Sinopec responded to these pressures by strengthening its industrial chain resilience, optimizing production, and adjusting product mixes. The company focused on maximizing yields of high-value products like jet fuel and refining by-products. These strategies contributed to a third-quarter net profit of RMB 13.361 billion, representing a 57.2% increase year-on-year. In accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards, profit attributable to shareholders for the first three quarters was RMB 40.167 billion, up 25.3% year-on-year.

Capital expenditure for the first three quarters totaled RMB 74.5 billion, with significant investments in crude oil and natural gas production capacity, refining upgrades, and the development of integrated energy stations. Total revenue figures were not provided in the filing.

The company’s performance reflects a broader trend of robust revenue and profit growth among major Indian companies, though consumer-facing businesses are experiencing margin compression due to rising input costs. Sinopec’s ability to navigate volatile crude prices and adapt to changing demand patterns positions it as a key player in the Chinese energy sector, though the sustainability of these margins will depend on continued geopolitical stability and evolving energy consumption trends.
