Sumitomo Corporation Raises FY27 Outlook, Boosts Dividend on Strong First Half

Sumitomo Corporation is projecting a stronger-than-previously-anticipated fiscal year 2027, fueled by robust first-half performance and a revised upward forecast for profitability. The company now expects a ¥670 billion profit for the year ending March 2027, a 6.3% increase over its prior ¥630 billion estimate. This improved outlook prompted a simultaneous increase in both its interim and projected full-year dividends.

The upward revision to the profit forecast stems from a strong first-half showing, with an interim profit of ¥347.9 billion, exceeding the ¥315 billion reported in the same period last year. The company cited strong performance across various sectors, including construction machinery and resource trading, as key drivers. While the filing does not detail specific margin pressures, it acknowledges a generally challenging global economic environment marked by geopolitical tensions and fluctuating energy prices.

The increased profitability has enabled Sumitomo to boost shareholder returns. The company announced an interim dividend of ¥22 per share, up from ¥20 per share previously, and a full-year dividend forecast of ¥44 per share, a ¥4 increase from the prior projection. This represents a commitment to a total shareholder return of over 40%, aligning with the company’s stated policy.

This positive revision follows a recent stock split in July 2026, impacting per-share figures. While the company’s outlook acknowledges ongoing global risks – including Middle East instability, energy price volatility, and inflationary pressures – the current forecast demonstrates resilience and an ability to navigate these challenges. The improved outlook and increased dividends signal confidence in Sumitomo's ability to capitalize on favorable market conditions and deliver sustained value to its shareholders.
