Sumitomo Electric Reports Record First-Half Profit, Boosts Dividend

Sumitomo Electric Industries reported record first-half profits, with net income increasing 62.7% year-over-year to ¥159.384 billion. The strong results, detailed in its quarterly report released October 30th, were driven by robust demand in data center-related products, alongside solid performance in power cables, automotive components, and flexible printed circuits. Overall revenue for the period reached ¥276.491 billion, a 16.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

The company attributed the significant gains to increased sales volume, improved product mix, cost reduction efforts, and the positive impact of a weaker yen. While acknowledging headwinds from rising raw material costs and geopolitical risks, particularly in the Middle East, Sumitomo Electric demonstrated an ability to maintain profitability. Operating profit rose substantially by 43.5% to ¥219.567 billion, and operating margins expanded to 29.3%.

Reflecting the positive financial performance, Sumitomo Electric revised its full-year dividend forecast upward to ¥44 per share, an increase of ¥5 from the previously announced estimate of ¥39 per share. This revision signals confidence in the company’s ability to sustain strong performance through the remainder of the fiscal year. The company also reported an interim dividend of ¥19 per share.

The results show a clear momentum within the business, particularly in segments benefitting from structural growth trends like data center infrastructure and electric vehicles. A detailed breakdown reveals strong performance in the Information and Communication segment, driven by demand for optical devices, alongside continued strength in the Automotive and Electronics businesses. The reported figures underscore Sumitomo Electric’s ability to navigate a complex global economic landscape and capitalize on emerging opportunities.
