Sumitomo Electric Reports Record First-Half Profit, Sales Up 16.5%
Sumitomo Electric Industries posted record first-half profits, with net income jumping 62.7% year-over-year to ¥159.384 billion. The increase reflects a 16.5% rise in sales to ¥2.765 trillion, driven by robust demand across key sectors. The company attributes the growth to increased sales volume, improved product mix, and a favorable exchange rate, despite rising raw material costs, particularly in the Middle East.
This performance was broad-based, with the information and communication segment experiencing a 48.8% sales increase fueled by demand for optical components for data centers. The industrial materials segment also saw strong growth, up 28.1%, driven by increased orders for cemented carbide products amid supply constraints. While the automotive segment also benefited from increased sales, rising material costs impacted profitability, resulting in a 17.3% sales increase but a decrease in operating income. The environment and energy segment experienced a modest sales increase of 2.0%, but a decline in operating income due to the exclusion of a consolidated subsidiary.
Sumitomo Electric’s financial position remains solid, with total assets reaching ¥5.190 trillion. However, the company’s self-capital ratio decreased slightly to 55.4%. Cash flow from operating activities decreased to ¥139.394 billion compared to ¥251.944 billion in the same period last year, impacted by increases in working capital. Investment activities saw a cash outflow of ¥122.235 billion, primarily due to capital expenditures.
These results come as Sumitomo Electric diversifies into India’s renewable energy sector, recently taking a 49% stake in Hero Future Energies. The company is also navigating a complex macroeconomic environment, with geopolitical risks and inflationary pressures impacting input costs. The strong performance in the first half positions Sumitomo Electric to pursue its 'Medium-Term Management Plan 2028', targeting ¥6 trillion in sales and ¥600 billion in operating profit by fiscal 2028.
