Tokyo Gas Reports Lower Profit Despite Revenue Gain

Tokyo Gas reported a decline in net profit for the first half of fiscal year 2027, despite a modest increase in revenue, signaling headwinds impacting profitability amidst a complex macroeconomic environment. Net profit decreased by 23.6% year-on-year to ¥99.031 billion, while revenue rose 2.1% to ¥1,375.821 billion.

The mixed results reflect a 2.5% decrease in urban gas sales volume due to reduced demand from commercial and industrial customers, partially offset by increased revenue from the North American shale gas business. Operating expenses increased by 1.6% to ¥1,272.538 billion, driven by rising crude oil prices. While operating profit increased by 8.4% to ¥103.283 billion, and ordinary profit rose by 25.2% to ¥107.950 billion, these gains were not enough to offset the decline in net income.

Tokyo Gas is actively returning capital to shareholders, announcing a share buyback program authorizing the repurchase of up to 12 million shares, with a total value of up to ¥50 billion. The company also introduced an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), establishing a trust to acquire and deliver shares to eligible employees, aiming to enhance employee engagement and align interests with company performance. The ESOP will be funded entirely by the company, with an initial investment of ¥687 million to purchase up to 137,100 shares.

The company’s balance sheet shows total assets increasing by 6.2% to ¥4,135.384 billion, while net assets grew by 0.6% to ¥1,807.412 billion. The self-capital ratio declined slightly to 42.4%, reflecting the increase in liabilities. The company’s strategic moves, including the share buyback and ESOP, alongside its reported performance, position it within a broader context of moderate economic growth tempered by inflationary pressures and geopolitical risks, as reflected in recent market narratives.
