UOB Increases Indonesian Asset Management Stake, Dissolves Subsidiary

United Overseas Bank (UOB) bolstered its presence in the Indonesian asset management market while simultaneously streamlining its portfolio, according to a disclosure filed today. The bank increased its shareholding in PT UOB Asset Management Indonesia (PT UOBAMI) to 85.71% through a IDR 250 million (approximately US$16.4 million) capital injection, up from 84.09% prior to the rights issue offering. This move signals UOB's continued commitment to expanding its wealth management capabilities in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

The capital injection into PT UOBAMI comes amidst increased foreign investor interest in India’s financial sector and broader regional expansion, as evidenced by recent acquisitions such as Fairfax Financial’s stake in IDBI Bank. While the filing does not detail specific growth targets for the Indonesian subsidiary, the increased ownership suggests UOB anticipates further expansion and opportunities within the Indonesian market. The move allows UOB to consolidate its control and potentially benefit more directly from the growth of Indonesia’s asset management industry.

Alongside the Indonesian investment, UOB dissolved Chung Khiaw Realty Limited on August 13, 2026, characterizing the move as part of an ongoing group rationalization. The bank stated this dissolution will not materially impact its earnings for the financial year ending December 31, 2026. This suggests the subsidiary was either non-performing or its assets were strategically reallocated. Similar share purchase mandate renewals, outlined in filings dating back to 2017, demonstrate UOB’s consistent approach to managing its capital structure and streamlining operations.

The simultaneous investment and dissolution suggest a proactive approach to portfolio management, prioritizing growth in key regional markets like Indonesia while shedding non-core assets. The 85.71% stake in PT UOBAMI positions UOB to capitalize on Indonesia’s growing middle class and increasing demand for wealth management services, while the dissolution of Chung Khiaw Realty Limited reflects a focus on optimizing capital allocation.
