Volkswagen Reports €5.82 Billion Q3 Loss, Forecasts Near Break-Even Year

Volkswagen AG reported a substantial loss of €5.82 billion for the third quarter of 2026, signaling deepening financial strain and prompting a significant downward revision of its full-year outlook. This marks a stark reversal for the automaker, placing it on track for its first annual loss since the diesel scandal. The results, disclosed on October 29th, reveal a challenging operating environment, particularly in China, and highlight the financial impact of strategic adjustments.

The downturn was fueled by a €113 million operating loss in the first nine months of 2026 related to its Chinese joint ventures, largely attributed to a write-down of the MEB electric vehicle platform, which failed to gain traction in the Chinese market. Before this write-down, the result would have been marginally positive at €110 million. The company now expects its operating return on sales for the full year to be around zero, a dramatic reduction from its previous forecast of 4.0 to 5.5 percent. This revised outlook reflects ongoing struggles to achieve profitability in the face of intense competition and shifting consumer preferences.

The broader context reveals a weakening automotive market in China and a intensifying price war within the electric vehicle segment. While Volkswagen has seen increased demand for EVs in Europe – with electric vehicles accounting for 20% of deliveries and 40% of the order backlog – this success has not yet translated into improved profitability. The company delivered 1.89 million vehicles globally in the first nine months of the year, a decrease of nearly 14.3 percent compared to the same period last year, with deliveries in China dropping by 38.5 percent to 406,000 units.

Adding to Volkswagen’s challenges, the company is facing scrutiny following Audi CEO Gernot Döllner’s controversial appearance with US President Donald Trump, prompting a special supervisory board meeting to discuss the planned US factory and the implications of the event. The company’s share price has fallen by nearly one-third since the end of 2025, while BYD, a key competitor, has experienced a 28 percent decline in market capitalization this year.

The reported €5.82 billion loss for Q3 and the negative €2.72 billion result for the first nine months of 2026 underscore a significant deterioration in Volkswagen’s financial performance. The shift towards electric vehicles, while showing demand in Europe, is not currently offsetting the decline in traditional vehicle sales and the challenges within the Chinese market. This financial strain is occurring against a backdrop of increased competition and a broader downturn in the automotive sector.
